HURRICANE WATCHDOG'S MISSION

Thanks for stopping by.  Hurricanewatchdog.com was born on paper in July of 2005 after Hurricane Dennis.   It became clear to me then, that many people - including longtime coastal residents  - really didn't know what to do when a hurricane is headed their way.  As a newcomer to the Mississippi coast during hurricane season, my family was really lost.  Then came Hurricane Katrina.   Not knowing or not heeding the warnings was deadly for so many people.

You need a place to go to plan, to learn, to prepare.  That's what hurricanewatchdog.com is all about - leading you to sources of information from one spot.  Look here for links you can go to and learn about how storm surge can affect you, what your evacuation zone is, hurricane tracking and much more.  You’ll find some information right here on the site, but more than that, you’ll find links to lead you some of the experts on weather, planning and more.

The links on this page will take you to various subjects.  Take time now to look the site over, see what’s here and visit the links that are pertinent to you in your area.

Don't be a victim.  Be ready.  It could save your life.

PREPARING – You need to prepare.  Right now.  Do you know if your home is in a storm surge area?  You may be surprised.  How about flooding?  What about your evacuation zone?  Long before a tropical wave forms, you need to know the answers to these questions.

       Other things to consider:

Do you know you have the right coverage for your property?
Under what conditions (expected storm severity) will you leave?
Where will you go?  A shelter?  A motel?  A friend or relative's house?
                What about your pets?
What evacuation route will you take?
What supplies do you need at home?

DURING A HURRICANEChances are, if you are viewing this page, you are dealing with a hurricane.   Having been there myself, I know it's an anxious and uncertain time.  Information is sketchy, at best.  Sometimes, there's no information at all. (Read more)

AFTER THE STORM The hours and days following a hurricane are almost surreal.  The power and fury unleashed, and the damage that's done is actually numbing.  Landscape is changed, landmarks are damaged or sometimes simply not there anymore.  Chaos ensues.  Residents are stunned and, sadly, there are those who take advantage of it right away.                                 (Read more)

HELP IS ON THE WAY! - Here are just a few stories of the people who make a real difference after a disaster.  The Volunteers.    (Read more)
